Baking Powder Biscuits 3 cups flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup vegetable shortening 1 cup milk 3 tablespoons butter, melted Sift flour, baking powder and salt together in large bowl. Add shortening and cut into dry ingredients with pastry blender, until it resembles coarse meal. Make a well in the center of mixture and pour in milk. Mix together only long enough to form a soft dough. Knead it for about 30 seconds and roll dough about 1/2 inch thick on well-floured surface. Cut the dough into 2-inch rounds with cookie cutter or water glass. Gather together any remaining dough, roll again, and cut more. Brush with butter. Arrange biscuits on a cookie sheet, and bake in the middle of oven at 400° for 20 minutes. Serve fresh out of the oven! Makes 16-20 biscuits.
